EDWARD F. WHIPPS: A complex custody case is almost always one where one or both parties have some significant psychological issues. When there are psychological problems evident in a case, it doesn't necessarily mean that that individual cannot be a good parent. But it is important to understand the nature of their disability, the nature of their personality disorder, and what limitations it does place on their parenting capacity. And it helps us figure out a good plan to allocate parental rights and responsibilities in a way that meets the children's best interests.

Relocation by one of the parties is one of the most complex issues that we face in trying to resolve custody problems. When one party wants to move significant distance from the other, the focus has to stay on what's in the best interest of the child, not just what's in the best interest of the parent that wants that child with them.

Some of the factors that are really important to consider are--what kind of school will they have if they move? What kind of school do they have here? What are the situations in terms of where their family is most located? And where are their friends?

In a complex case, whether it's custody or it's financial, experience is what really counts. There is no substitute for good experience. If you're facing custody issues, we'd like to help you. At Edward F. Whipps and Associates, children matter most.
