EDWARD F. WHIPPS: Child development and psychological issues are often at the heart of many domestic problems. So I think a background in psychology and child development can often be a real key to a successful divorce case. Understanding the psychology of the situation or any of the mental health issues that affect so many of our cases is extremely important.
If your spouse is the kind of a person who's never at fault--anything goes wrong, it's always to blame somebody else--that's at the heart of narcissism. They have no capacity to have any empathetic awareness of your emotional needs or your children's emotional needs. They're driven all of the time by their own emotional needs.
We also see a number of cases in which there's a borderline personality disorder. So if your spouse is changing mood frequently, you never know what to expect from one moment to the next, whether things will go well today or they won't, and will they change quickly, you may be dealing with a borderline personality problem.
Understanding the psychology of the situation, whether it's personality disorders or mental health issues of other kinds, it's very important. It affects the strategy that we use. And it affects the approach that we take to protect children.
If you have a spouse or children that have significant mental health issues, I think we're uniquely equipped to help you. And we would invite you to call us.
