Columbus Lawyers Using Principles of Psychology in Divorce
At Edward F. Whipps & Associates, in the Columbus, Ohio, area, our founding attorney has spent a great deal of time in the in-depth study of psychology. Mr. Whipps is past president of the Ohio Board of Psychology and works with a network of psychologists to help clients understand the emotional impact of a divorce.
Mr. Whipps' understanding helps give our clients an edge because we are able to structure legal approaches to divorce that meet their psychological needs while keeping in mind the psychological problems of others.
Sometimes, due to a personality disorder on the part of a spouse, a marriage cannot be maintained. Sometimes these personality disorders prevent divorces from being amicable. At Edward F. Whipps & Associates, we understand how mental health issues affect relationships between couples. We structure our legal approach to take these issues into account.
If, due to a personality disorder, it is clear that settlement cannot be reached through negotiation, we will not hesitate to litigate your divorce aggressively — forcefully working to have issues of child custody and visitation, child support and spousal support resolved in your favor.
As experienced attorneys familiar with psychology, we often work with clients whose spouses experience common psychological problems:
- Narcissistic personality disorder: According to the DSM IV-R, narcissistic personality disorder is a personality disorder marked by a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and a lack of empathy for the emotional needs of others. NPD sufferers are primarily men who use various methods to get their own emotional needs met, often at the expense of others.
- Borderline personality disorder: BPD describes a long-term disturbance in the ability of a person to function, often due to abuse during childhood. Sufferers often experience unstable moods and disassociative patterns sometimes called “splitting." People with BPD are sometimes unable to distinguish between the way they feel and reality. They fear abandonment and often have anger control problems. Their moods can swing without warning and serious self-destructive behavior patterns are often seen. Suicide is even a risk in some individuals.
- Other serious psychological concerns are often very important aspects of divorce cases. These may include bipolar disorders, attention deficit disorders, substance related disorders and other mood or anxiety disorders.
