Chris is a 2006 graduate of Capital University Law School and has been practicing family law since 2007. Chris has extensive experience in all areas of family law, including divorce, child custody, child support, dissolution, civil protection orders and paternity matters.
During law school, Chris developed a passion in advocating for victims of abuse and was chosen as an extern for the Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center. Upon graduation from law school, Chris worked as a staff attorney in Capital University Law School’s Family Advocacy Clinic for five years where he provided compassionate and effective representation to victims of domestic violence in family law matters. Chris then transitioned to a small private practice firm that specialized in family law before joining Edward F. Whipps & Associates in November 2015.
Chris understands the importance of hiring an attorney that is familiar with the area of law and the court proceedings while also understanding family law matters can be stressful. Chris understands that while he has significant family law experience, this may be your first time going through this process and he strives to ensure that each client receives the personal attention that is necessary to navigate an emotionally difficult time.

The newest team member at Edward F. Whipps & Associates, John C. Ruiz-Bueno has been practicing law since 2010. He has experience in all areas of family law and estate planning. In particular, Mr. Ruiz-Bueno displays an innate talent for handing matters requiring complex calculations, including spousal support, child support, retirement division, taxation issues, and property division. He has even developed his own calculation software, which accounts for numerous variables to determine an equitable resolution of any related issues for the benefit of his clients.
Mr. Ruiz-Bueno’s experience and passion for serving others is particularly suited for helping his clients plan their estates and ultimately administer them with the court, if necessary. When counseling his clients, he helps them understand all the options available so they can make educated decisions.
Service to his community includes: free legal counsel through the ABC 6 Ask the Attorney program, assistance to low-income individuals through the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, and volunteer work at legal clinics. He has also presented seminars on estate planning matters to serve various senior centers and organizations around Franklin County. Finally, he has served with the Christian Legal Society, both in its attorney chapter and as a speaker and mentor to the student chapters at Ohio State and Capital law schools.

Mr. Whipps has earned a reputation as a capable and effective matrimonial lawyer and he has been an active bar and community leader. He has served as President of the Ohio Board of Psychology, the Upper Arlington Board of Education, The Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Creative Living, Inc. and Unverferth House He has also served as a National Vice President of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He has chaired several committees of the Columbus Bar Association and the Franklin County Trial Lawyers Association and served as the Host of many TV programs including Upper Arlington Plain Talk, U.A. Today, Bridging Disability, Lawyers on Call, and The Ohio Wesleyan Experience. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and as a Preeminent Lawyer in the Family Law Section of the Martindale-Hubbell® Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.
Mr. Whipps has demonstrated the unique ability to both understand important psychological principles and to apply them to the practice of family law. His ability to use his background in psychology is especially evident in his negotiation skills used to achieve successful results in divorce and dissolution cases. This same psychological background is especially important in handling custody matters and in developing effective parenting time schedules.
